is an attentive and zealous servant: his place has been supplied by Mr. John Smithers, who is to receive one half of Mr. Stephenson's salary, and Mr. Stephenson will draw the remaining moiety of his own, as well as the half of that of Mr. English: thus no extra expense is entailed on the Colony, but on the contrary, a saving of the full salary of Mr. Marques as Interpreter, amounting to £300 per annum. It will be necessary to provide for his room when the opportunity may offer, though I fear some considerable time will elapse before an efficient person be found. We are now left with only one European Interpreter of Chinese (Mr. Caldwell) whose duties will necessarily be much increased.
